Annual Well Woman Examinations
What is a well-woman exam?
A well-woman exam is a series of reproductive health screening and tests that help identify any issues with various aspects of your reproductive health. These tests can usually be done in one in office visit at our Smyrna, TN location.
Who needs a well-woman exam?
Women of all ages are eligible even if you feel completely healthy. It’s important to make an annual well-woman exam part of your annual health care routine. Regular monitoring helps you stay healthy and prevents many reproductive issues from occurring in the first place. Even more serious issues can be easily fixed when caught early on.
What happens during a well-woman exam?
The exact nature of your well-woman exam depends on a few factors, such as your age, sexual history, and medical history. Adjustments will be made to your exam as necessary based on these factors as well as whether you’re a new or existing patient. You can generally expect the following during your well-woman exam:
Medical health questions
If you’ve been experiencing pain or discomfort related to your breasts or vagina, or have concerns about your period, your exam is the perfect time to discuss them. Openly talking about your symptoms helps diagnose or rule out any potential health concerns that may be responsible for any issues you’re having.
Sexual health questions
Your sexual history is a part of your overall health and discussing it helps pinpoint any potential health problems. This is also an excellent opportunity to discuss birth control options and questions.
Starting around age 21, you’ll need regular pelvic and breast exams as well as Pap tests to make sure your reproductive organs are in good health. If you’re older, mammograms and other similar tests are recommended to keep an eye out for early signs of cancer.
How should I prepare for a well-woman exam?
You don’t need to make any major preparations for your exam, though you should come on a day when you don’t expect to be on your period. You might also prepare a list of any health questions you have so you don’t forget to ask when you are put on the spot. Your health is always our number one concern.
